Burnaby is a city in British Columbia, Canada, located immediately to the east of Vancouver. Burnaby is bounded to the south by the Fraser River, to the west by Burrard Inlet, to the north by English Bay (Vancouver’s West End neighbourhood), and to the east by Boundary Road.
Burnaby lies at an elevation of approximately sea level. Due to its proximity to Vancouver, it is often regarded as a suburb of that city; however, Burnaby has drastically different demographics and its own large urban centre surrounding Metrotown. The boundaries between these neighbouring municipalities are complex; in general, Burnaby can be conceptually divided into several smaller regions which include:
Central Burnaby, the original core of the city including the historic downtown and Metrotown areas;
North Burnaby, containing many single-family homes as well as high-density apartment and condominium complexes;
South Burnaby, a relatively diverse neighbourhood spanning industrial and residential areas; and
East Burnaby, which includes the large Edmonds neighbourhood as well as several smaller suburban areas.
Burnaby is connected to Vancouver via SkyTrain’s Millennium Line and Expo Line; it also has a network of bus routes. Several major roadways pass through the city, most notably Hastings Street (which connects Vancouver to the Fraser Valley) and Lougheed Highway (which connects Burnaby to Coquitlam and points east).
Burnaby borders the City of Vancouver on the north, the Fraser River on the south, New Westminster on the southeast, and Coquitlam on the east.
